Pinegrass and Li’l Smokies in Concert

You’ll not want to miss the first in a series of concerts being presented by the Montana Rockies Bluegrass Association.    Our premier show will feature two of Missoula’s hottest bluegrass bands currently playing out.

The Li’l Smokies is a bluegrass group that has taken Western Montana by storm. This collection of 20-something’s have been jamming together for several years and recently formed this great group that now has a busy performance schedule playing clubs and events.  They play lightning fast instrumentals that will be sure to get your toes a tappin’.   You’ll recognize Broken Valley Roadshow banjoist, Matt Cornette.  You may also recognize Dobro player, Andy Dunnigan, as the son of longtime Whitefish-based performer, John Dunnigan.  All of these guys are extremely proficient on multiple instruments and swap off throughout their show.  They join vocals for classic 4-part harmonies.  Heck sometimes, they even find a 5th part.

Pinegrass reins as Missoula’s longest continually performing bluegrass band.  For  25+ years, they took the stage at the Top Hat following the Tuesday night bluegrass pickin’ circle.  The band members have held fairly steady over the years with the current members being Bill Neaves – guitar and vocals, Chad Fadely – mandolin, Rick Ryan – bass and vocals, Jack Mauer – banjo/dobro, John Joyner – fiddle.  Their years of playing together reflects in a group of stellar musicians who make it look easy as they each take their breaks on the bluegrass standards.  Rick Ryan sings the high-lonesome vocal harmony parts giving them a traditional bluegrass sound.

This show will take place in the intimate and comfortable setting of the new Downtown Dance Collective in Missoula a great room for hearing live music.  It is sure to be a sellout show, so arrive early to assure your seat.  Show starts at 8pm.  Tickets go on sale at DDC at 7:30 pm.

Please let me know ASAP if your band would like to play as all 19 slots are usually filled within 24 hours… thanks Mike and Tari

Jesse Brock mandolin player of the year

It’s so fun to surf YouTube listening to bluegrass.  Sometimes you run across some real treasures.   Here’s a clip I stumbled on of the CW Brock family playing at the Berkshire Mountain Bluegrass Festival in the mid 80’s.  The young mandolin player here is Jesse Brock who was voted 2009 IBMA mandolin player of the year.

Young Virginia Squires with Rickie Simpkins

Here’s a smokin’ version of Free Wheelin’ by the Virginia Squires in the early ’80’s.  Band members included Rickie Simpkins on Mando.  Later Rickie was to record fiddle with us on Blue Angel’s 1st and only CD “Dance a Little Closer”

We had a blast recording with, hangin’ out with and performing with Rickie and his brother Ronnie Simpkins at the 1st and 2nd Wing’s and Strings festival’s in Florida.  What a nice guy and amazing musician.

Listen to cuts from the Blue Angel CD on my myspace page at www.myspace.com/phylliserck and on Victoria’s page at www.myspace.com/victoriaginty.  (Note: be careful on Mypace it’s virus prone).

If you’d like to purchase a copy of Blue Angel’s “Dance a Little Closer”, I’ll have them at the next MRBA jam on Jan 9 at Ruby’s Inn.

2009 Annual Meeting

Pictures from the Annual Meeting, pizza party and jam are up on the website and here’s a little video of the fun jam.

Our President, Dallas, led a great meeting. We had a lot of input from attendees and had several new members step up to volunteer to serve the association. Brian Herbal is leaving his position on the Board. Ted Lowe has moved back East to help his folks and so had to step down too. Thank you Brian and Ted for your time and help with MRBA these past few years. Greg Boyd and Ken Benson were voted into these 2 Board positions. The rest of the Officers stayed the same.

Dallas Olson, President
Mike Conroy, VP
Tari Conroy, Board of Directors
Ken Benson, Board of Directors
Greg Boyd, Board of Directors
Lois Malikie, Sec/Treas
Ben Essary, tempoary Newsletter
Phyllis Erck, Webmaster
Randy Dollar, Event Calendar

This will be Lois’ last year as Sec/Treas
Ben needs a replacement as newsletter Editor to take over after the January issue.

We’ll also need a lot of help with all the show and festivals. So there will be a lot of opportunities to get involved with this fun association this year.

The January newsletter will have a full report n the annual meeting but a couple of important highlights of note are 1) we will sponsor Mike and Tari’s Hardtimes Festival  2)  the association will sponsor shows.  We’ll start with a series of concerts this winter 2 in Missoula and 1 in Stevensville.  If you have a bluegrass band and would like to be considered for our concert series please email mrba@mtbluegrass.com.
